Weak Squares and Pawn Structure

Perhaps you’ve noticed that weak squares and backward pawns seem to go together. That’s not an accident. Since pawns capture diagonally and not forwards, the square in front of a pawn is always a potentially weak square. I strongly suggest that you review Chapter 11 and look for all the weak squares that go with each pawn structure. Keep in mind that when pawns are lined up side by side there are no weak squares in front of them! That’s one big reason the pawn duo is such a strong pawn formation.

In addition to backward pawns, one of the pawn structures that most naturally gives rise to weak squares is the isolated pawn. Because there are no pawns on the files adjacent to the isolated pawn, the square in front of the isolated pawn is weak. So for example in Diagram 5, the d4 square is weak, and White can use it for his pieces.
